Xiaomi: Empty the Gallery Trash Bin

Deleted photos and videos in Xiaomi's Gallery app sit in the trash bin for up to 30 days before MIUI deletes them automatically. Until that happens, they still count against your storage, even though you already deleted them. If you want that space back right away, you can clear the trash bin manually instead of waiting.

Empty the Gallery Trash Bin auf Xiaomi

MIUI does not delete photos and videos the moment you remove them from Gallery. Instead they move into the trash bin, where they stay for 30 days as a safety buffer in case you deleted something by mistake.

During that time, the files still take up storage space on your device. If your storage is running low or you simply want a clean overview without leftover items, clearing the trash bin manually solves that.

To do it, open GalleryAlbumsTrash bin. From there, tap Clear all and confirm with Delete.

This action removes every item currently sitting in the trash bin. There is no separate recovery step after this point, so make sure none of the files are needed before confirming.

If you only want more storage without losing the safety net, it is often better to leave items in the trash and let the automatic 30-day deletion handle it, or restore only the photos you actually need and leave the rest.

Frequently asked questions

No. Once you confirm Delete after Clear all, the files are permanently removed and cannot be restored from within the Gallery app.
