Xiaomi: Turn On One-Handed Keyboard Mode

Typing with one thumb on a large Xiaomi screen often means missing keys on the far side of the keyboard. The stock layout stretches across the full display width, so you end up stretching your thumb or shifting your grip with every message. Xiaomi's keyboard settings can shrink and pin the whole layout to the left or right edge instead.

One-Handed Keyboard Mode auf Xiaomi

A full-width keyboard forces your thumb to travel across the entire screen with every tap. On larger Xiaomi phones this quickly becomes uncomfortable when you are holding the device in one hand, for example on a bus or while carrying something in the other hand.

One-handed mode shrinks the keyboard and shifts it to the left or right edge of the screen, so every key stays within thumb reach. This only changes the layout of the built-in keyboard app itself, it does not resize any other part of the interface.

You find the option here: Tap on SettingsTap on Additional settingsTap on Languages & inputTap on Manage keyboardsTap on SettingsTap on PreferencesTap on One-handed modeChoose an option. Pick left-handed or right-handed mode depending on which hand you type with.

Once enabled, a small arrow or handle usually appears on the keyboard edge, letting you resize or move it further, or switch back to the full layout. If you use a third-party keyboard app instead of the default one, look for the same setting inside that app, since Xiaomi's system menu only controls its own keyboard.

If your main issue is that the keyboard itself is too small or too large rather than off-center, check the keyboard height or size settings in the same Preferences menu instead of one-handed mode.

Frequently asked questions

Once one-handed mode is active, a small handle or arrow appears on the keyboard edge. Tapping it usually lets you flip sides or return to the full layout without going back into Settings.
