Turn Read in Background On or Off for Select to Speak auf Xiaomi
Select to Speak is part of the Accessibility tools built into MIUI. The Read in background option controls whether the text-to-speech engine keeps narrating content after you leave the app it started in.
This behavior is not a bug by default. It is a deliberate, experimental setting Xiaomi added so long articles or documents can keep playing while you check messages or switch tasks.
The catch is stability. Because Xiaomi marks it experimental, the reading engine can lag, mispronounce, or stop unexpectedly on some MIUI builds, especially after switching between several apps quickly.
You find the toggle here:
Settings ➔ Additional settings ➔ Accessibility ➔ Vision ➔ Select to Speak ➔ Settings ➔ enable or disable Read in background.
Turn it on if you regularly want narration to continue while multitasking and can tolerate occasional glitches. Turn it off if you notice the voice reading unrelated screens, draining battery faster than expected, or freezing after an app switch.
If speech stops entirely instead of just misbehaving in the background, check that Select to Speak itself is still enabled before troubleshooting this specific toggle.
