Xiaomi: Enable Location Tags for Camera Photos

Photos and videos from the Xiaomi camera arrive without any location tag, so sorting vacation shots by place later only works if you remember the trip yourself. That happens because the camera option for saving location info sits switched off out of the box. Turning it on lets the Camera app attach GPS coordinates to every photo and video you capture.

Save Location Info for Photos and Videos auf Xiaomi

MIUI ships with location tagging turned off in the Camera app. Without it, photos and videos only carry a timestamp, not the place where you took them, which makes sorting a big trip or several similar-looking locations harder afterward.

To turn it on, open Camera, then tap the menu icon and go to Settings. Inside the settings list, find the toggle labeled Save location info and switch it on. From that point, every new photo and video stores GPS coordinates as part of its file data.

The camera needs access to your device's location service for this to work, so make sure location is enabled in the system settings as well. If GPS is off or the signal is weak indoors, the saved coordinates can be inaccurate or missing entirely for that shot.

Keep in mind that geotagged files reveal exactly where a photo was taken once you share them outside the device. If you regularly post photos online, review that before sending or uploading, since the location stays embedded unless it gets stripped by the sharing app.

Switch the setting off again anytime through the same CameraMenuSettingsSave location info path if you no longer want new shots tagged.

Frequently asked questions

No. Save location info only applies to photos and videos captured after you enable it. Files taken earlier stay without coordinates.
