Xiaomi: Turn Select to Speak On or Off

If Select to Speak stays greyed out or its icon never shows up in your navigation bar, the accessibility shortcut on your Xiaomi phone is probably still switched off. Once enabled, tapping the icon lets you select any text or image on screen and have it read aloud instantly. Turning it off again removes the icon without touching other accessibility settings.

Turn Select to Speak On or Off auf Xiaomi

Select to Speak is a screen-reading tool bundled with MIUI's Accessibility settings under the Vision section. Once turned on, it adds a floating icon to your navigation bar that lets you tap any text, image, or button and have it read aloud through your phone speaker or connected headset.

The feature stays hidden by default because it works as an accessibility shortcut rather than a system-wide setting. If you never opened the Accessibility menu, the shortcut was never assigned, so no icon appears even though the underlying service already exists on your device.

To enable or disable it, go to Tap on SettingsTap on Additional settingsTap on AccessibilityTap on VisionTap on Select to SpeakEnable or disable Select to Speak shortcut.

Once active, tap the icon and then tap any element on screen to hear it read aloud. Tapping the icon a second time closes the tool without disabling it permanently.

If you only need occasional text-to-speech for long articles, a dedicated reading app may work better than toggling this shortcut every time. Disabling Select to Speak does not affect TalkBack or any other accessibility service running on the phone.
