Xiaomi: Set a Data Limit for the Wi-Fi Hotspot

If your mobile data plan drains fast whenever you share your Xiaomi phone's Wi-Fi hotspot with a laptop or tablet, an unlimited hotspot session is usually the cause. MIUI lets you cap the exact amount of data the hotspot can share and pick what happens once that cap is reached.

Set Wi-Fi Hotspot Data Limit auf Xiaomi

When you turn on the portable hotspot on a Xiaomi phone, connected devices can pull data without any cap by default. That is fine for a quick tethering session, but it becomes a problem on a limited mobile plan, especially if a laptop starts downloading updates in the background.

MIUI includes a one-time data limit for exactly this case. You set a fixed data volume for the current hotspot session and choose whether the system only warns you or shuts the hotspot down automatically once the limit is hit.

Where to find the setting

Go to SettingsPortable hotspotOne-time data limit. Turn the toggle to enable or disable the limit for the current hotspot session.

Once enabled, set the size in MB or GB and pick the action for when the limit is exceeded: keep the hotspot running with only a notification, or turn the hotspot off automatically.

The limit applies per hotspot session. If you turn the hotspot off and on again, you may need to check the setting again before sharing data on a tight plan.

Frequently asked questions

The limit is tied to the current hotspot session. If you turn the hotspot off and back on, check SettingsPortable hotspotOne-time data limit again, since the previous cap may no longer apply.
