Xiaomi: Enable the TalkBack Screen Reader

Once TalkBack starts running, every tap on the screen gets read aloud instead of performed right away, which throws off anyone who did not expect the phone to switch to gesture-based navigation. This screen reader is essential for blind or low-vision users, but a stray touch inside the Accessibility menu can turn it on by accident too, changing how the whole interface reacts to touch. Knowing exactly where the toggle sits helps you switch it on deliberately or turn it back off if the phone suddenly stops responding to normal taps.

Turn on TalkBack auf Xiaomi

TalkBack reads out labels, buttons and menu items so you can operate a Xiaomi phone without looking at the display. It is part of the Accessibility tools built into MIUI on top of Android and is meant for users who are blind, have low vision, or simply need audio confirmation of every action.

Once TalkBack is active, a single tap no longer opens an app or setting directly. It selects the item and reads it out loud, and you need a double tap to actually activate it. Swipe gestures also change, since one-finger swipes move focus between elements instead of scrolling content the usual way.

To turn it on, go to SettingsAdditional settingsAccessibilityVisionTalkBack, then enable the switch labelled Use Talkback and confirm the permission by tapping Allow.

If you only need larger text or higher contrast, TalkBack is the wrong tool, since it changes touch behavior across the whole system rather than just the display. Turn it off through the same menu path if the phone starts responding differently than expected after someone else enabled it by mistake.
