Xiaomi: Show Data Usage Warnings on the Lock Screen

If you blow through your mobile data plan before the billing cycle ends, you probably only find out when the carrier sends a throttling notice. Xiaomi phones can flag this earlier, but the lock screen warning for data usage is off by default on most devices. Without it enabled, you only see usage numbers if you open the Security app yourself.

Data Usage Warning on Lock Screen auf Xiaomi

Xiaomi tracks mobile data consumption inside the Security app rather than the standard system settings, which is why the lock screen warning option is easy to miss. Once enabled, the phone displays a notice directly on the lock screen when your defined data limit is close to being reached, so you do not have to open an app to check.

This function relies on the built-in data monitor, so it only tracks usage the phone itself measures. It will not match carrier billing exactly if your plan resets on a different date or includes shared data across multiple lines.

To turn it on, go to Tap on SecurityTap on SettingsTap on Data usageTap on Data usage warningEnable or disable Show warnings on lock screenSet the Data usage warning. Enter the limit that matches your plan, then confirm.

If your carrier already sends usage alerts by text or app, this lock screen warning is optional and can be left disabled. It is most useful when you are on a capped plan without automatic carrier notifications, or when you share data with other devices on the same account.

Frequently asked questions

The warning is based on the counter inside Data usage on your phone, not the carrier network. Small differences of a few hundred MB are normal, especially if the billing cycle start date does not match what you entered.
