Android: Change the Device Name

A new Android phone usually shows up in Bluetooth pairing lists, Wi-Fi Direct scans, and shared folders under its model number, not something you actually recognize. That happens because the factory device name comes straight from the hardware model, not from an account or profile setting. If you own several Android phones or share a network with family members, that generic label makes it hard to tell devices apart.

Change Device Name auf Android

By default, Android pulls the device name from the phone model set at the factory. This name is not tied to your Google account or a specific app. It is a system-level label stored in the phone settings, and it gets broadcast whenever the device connects to Bluetooth accessories, joins a Wi-Fi network, or shares files through Wi-Fi Direct or Nearby Share.

Because this name shows up on other people's screens during pairing or file transfers, leaving it as the raw model number makes your phone hard to identify among several devices. Changing it does not affect performance, connectivity, or any stored data. It only changes the label other devices and apps display.

Menu path

Open Tap on SettingsTap on About phoneTap on Device nameEnter a Name and tap on OK.

After confirming the new name, it applies immediately across Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Direct, and Nearby Share. You do not need to restart the phone for the change to take effect.

If you only want a friendlier name inside one specific app, such as a smart-home app, check that app's own device settings instead. Renaming the phone system-wide will not automatically update names stored inside third-party apps.

Frequently asked questions

Already paired accessories keep the connection working. Most accessories only update the displayed name the next time you open the Bluetooth menu or reconnect.
