Android: Create a Custom Contact Label

Android's default contact list treats every entry the same way, whether it's your manager or your sister. Labels solve that by grouping contacts you choose, and each label can carry its own photo and ringtone that plays whenever someone in that group calls.

Labels live inside the Contacts app menu rather than in general system settings. Open Open Contacts ➔ Open the menu ➔ Tap on Create label ➔ Type in a Label name and confirm with OK to set one up. Once created, you assign contacts to the label from their individual contact pages, and you can attach a picture or ringtone the same way you would for a single contact.

A label is different from a normal contact group synced through an account. Labels created this way stay local to the device unless your account setup mirrors them elsewhere, so they will not automatically appear if you switch phones without a backup.

If you only need to silence calls from unknown numbers, a label is the wrong tool for that; check call blocking or Do Not Disturb exceptions instead. Labels work best when you want quick visual or audio recognition for a defined group, like family, work, or a specific project team.
