Android: Turn Double-Space Period On or Off

If double-tapping the space bar suddenly inserts a period plus space you did not want, the 'Double-space period' setting in Gboard is active and doing more than you asked for. Some people turn it off because it adds unwanted punctuation inside abbreviations, URLs, or code. Others switch it on to end sentences faster without reaching for the period key.

Turn On/Off Double-Space Period auf Android

Gboard's Double-space period feature inserts a period automatically when you tap the space bar twice in a row. It lives inside the keyboard app's text correction options, not in the general typing settings of Android itself.

Turn it off if periods keep appearing inside abbreviations, file names, or code where you did not want punctuation. Turn it on if you type long messages and want a faster way to end sentences without reaching for the period key.

To change the setting, open SettingsSystemKeyboardOn-screen keyboardGboardText correction, then enable or disable Double-space period.

The toggle only affects Gboard. If you use a different keyboard app, look for a similar punctuation or autocorrect option inside that app's own settings instead.

This setting has no effect on autocorrect itself, spelling suggestions, or the keyboard layout - it only controls what happens when you tap space twice in a row.

Frequently asked questions

No. Autocorrect keeps suggesting and fixing words as usual; only the double-tap-to-period shortcut is removed.
