Android: Turn Glide Typing On or Off in Gboard

If typing on your Android keyboard feels slow because you tap every letter individually, Glide typing lets you swipe across the keys instead. Some phones ship with it disabled by default, and a few users find the swipe gesture triggers unwanted words or conflicts with one-handed typing. The toggle sits inside the keyboard app, not the general Android settings.

Turn On/Off Glide Typing auf Android

Glide typing is a Gboard feature that lets you enter words by dragging your finger across the letters instead of tapping each one. It runs independently from autocorrection and word suggestions, so switching it off does not change how predictions or corrections behave.

Some users disable it because the swipe gesture accidentally triggers wrong words during fast typing, or because they prefer classic tap input for precision. Others turn it on to speed up one-handed typing on larger screens.

Where to find the setting

The toggle lives inside the keyboard app settings, not in the general Android input menu:

Tap on SettingsTap on SystemTap on KeyboardTap on On-screen keyboardTap on GboardTap on Glide typingTurn on/off Enable glide typing

Inside the same menu you also find related options like Show gesture trail, which displays the visible line while you swipe, and additional gesture toggles that only apply while Glide typing is active.

If your keyboard app is not Gboard, the same setting is usually named differently and located under that app's own settings instead of the system Keyboard menu.

Frequently asked questions

This usually happens when your finger drifts near letters of a similar word. Turning off Show gesture trail does not fix this, but slowing down the swipe or disabling Glide typing under Tap on Glide typingTurn on/off Enable glide typing removes the issue completely.
