Android: Add a Widget to the Home Screen

If your home screen only shows app icons and never any live information, you are missing out on widgets. Weather updates, calendar events or music controls from apps like Spotify stay hidden because most people never find the widget menu. It sits behind a long-press gesture instead of a regular settings option, so it looks like the feature does not exist at all.

Add a Widget to the Home Screen auf Android

Widgets turn a static home screen into a source of live information. Some widgets belong to the system, such as a digital or analog clock. Others come from installed apps, like a music player from Spotify or a weather card. Both types work the same way once you know where the menu is hidden.

To place one, use the following path:

Tap and hold an empty space on the home screenTap on WidgetsChoose a CategoryTap and hold a WidgetMove and place the Widget on the home screen

The long-press on an empty area is the key step. If you long-press an app icon instead, you get a shortcut menu for that app, not the widget picker. Categories group widgets by app, so a music player and a calendar widget will not appear in the same list.

Once placed, a widget stays where you drop it until you move or remove it the same way, with a long press followed by a drag. If a widget does not update its content, check whether battery optimization is restricting that app in the background, since this can freeze the displayed data even though the widget itself is still on the screen.

Frequently asked questions

Some launchers replace the default menu with their own, so the option may be labeled differently or sit in a separate menu. If you use a third-party launcher instead of the stock one, check its own settings for a widget entry.
