Android: Hide Silent Notification Icons in the Status Bar

When every app adds its own icon to the status bar, the top of your screen fills up fast with symbols you barely glance at. Silent notifications are usually the worst offenders, since they clutter the bar without giving you anything urgent to check. Android lets you turn these icons off without muting the notifications themselves.

Hide Silent Notification Icons in the Status Bar auf Android

A crowded status bar usually comes from apps that keep pushing silent notifications. Android still shows an icon for each one, even if it never buzzes or makes a sound, so the bar fills up with symbols that carry no real urgency.

The setting responsible for this sits inside the notification settings, not inside each individual app. Go to Tap on SettingsTap on NotificationsEnable or disable Hide silent notifications in status bar to switch the behavior on or off.

Turning this on removes icons for notifications that are marked silent, meaning they neither play a sound nor vibrate. Notifications that are not silent, such as messages or calls, keep showing their icon as usual.

This setting only changes what appears in the status bar. It has no effect on the notification shade, so all notifications, silent or not, still show up in full when you swipe down from the top.

If you want to stop an app from notifying you at all, disabling notifications for that app is the better fix. Hiding icons in the status bar only cleans up the display, it does not block or delete any notification.

Frequently asked questions

No. The toggle under Tap on SettingsTap on NotificationsEnable or disable Hide silent notifications in status bar only removes the icon from the status bar. The notification itself still arrives and appears in the notification shade.
