Android: Turn On or Off Multiple Users

Lending your phone to someone else usually means handing over access to your messages, photos and installed apps as well. Android's multiple user feature creates a separate space for each person, but the switch that controls it sits inside a system menu most people never open. Turning that switch off also removes any extra profiles you already set up, along with their data.

Turn On or Off Multiple Users auf Android

Multiple user profiles let anyone who borrows your phone sign in with their own home screen, apps and accounts, separate from yours. The feature stays hidden until you switch it on, so an unused toggle is often the only reason a shared device still has just one profile.

To turn it on, open SettingsSystemMultiple usersEnable or disable Allow multiple users. Once the toggle is active, you can add new users from the same menu or from the quick settings panel, and each profile gets its own storage, apps and settings.

Switching the toggle back off removes access to every extra profile you created, including their apps and files. The data does not stay hidden in the background, it becomes unreachable until multiple users is turned on again, so back up anything important on a secondary profile first.

Leave the feature off if you are the only person using the phone or you prefer one shared login for everyone. In that case, a locked folder or app-specific PIN is usually a simpler way to protect sensitive apps than setting up a full second profile.

Frequently asked questions

The profile and everything stored in it become inaccessible as soon as you disable the toggle under SettingsSystemMultiple users. The data is not deleted immediately, but you cannot open it again until you re-enable the feature and switch back to that profile.
