An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a built-in chip inside a smartphone that replaces a physical SIM card. Mobile plans are activated digitally via QR code or app, without needing a SIM tray.

How does eSIM work?

An eSIM is a chip permanently soldered into the device, built to the GSMA eUICC standard, which takes over the role of a traditional SIM card. Instead of inserting a card, you download a digital profile from your carrier—usually by scanning a QR code or through the operator's app. This profile stores all data needed to identify you on the mobile network, such as the IMSI and authentication keys. Modern smartphones can store multiple eSIM profiles and often run one or more simultaneously, frequently alongside a physical SIM (Dual-SIM). Switching carriers happens entirely digitally: the old profile is deleted and a new one downloaded, with no waiting for a mailed card. eSIM saves internal space, improves resistance to dust and moisture since no card tray is needed, and simplifies switching between personal, business, or travel plans abroad. Not every carrier offers full eSIM support, and moving to a new device requires re-transferring the profile rather than a simple card swap.
