How does Roaming work?

Roaming works because mobile operators worldwide have partnership agreements with each other. When you travel abroad, your smartphone automatically connects to a local partner network that relays signals back to your home carrier. Your contract stays active, but billing runs through your home operator. Within the EU, the 'Roam like at Home' regulation ensures EU citizens can call, text, and browse at domestic rates while traveling in other EU countries—no extra charges. Outside the EU, roaming fees are often significantly higher unless you book a specific travel package. Technically, there's a distinction between voice roaming (calls), SMS roaming, and data roaming (mobile internet), each of which can be enabled or disabled separately in your smartphone settings. Modern smartphones automatically detect available networks and usually select the one with the best signal quality or most favorable terms. Alternatives to classic roaming include local SIM cards, eSIMs with travel plans, or dedicated travel SIMs, which are often cheaper than standard roaming outside the EU.
