VoLTE (Voice over LTE) carries voice calls over the 4G network instead of the older 2G/3G circuit-switched network. It enables HD voice quality and faster call setup times.
How does VoLTE work?
VoLTE uses IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) technology to transmit voice calls as data packets over the LTE network, rather than falling back to a separate 2G/3G circuit-switched voice network. This keeps the phone on the fast 4G network during a call instead of switching to a slower network—a process previously known as CSFB (Circuit Switched Fallback), which noticeably delayed call setup. Thanks to wider audio bandwidth, VoLTE delivers clearer, more natural voice quality known as HD Voice. It also allows simultaneous voice calls and mobile data use, which was often impossible on pure 3G networks without VoLTE. To use VoLTE, both the smartphone and the carrier (including the SIM) must support it; the feature can usually be toggled manually in network settings. As many countries phase out their 2G/3G networks, VoLTE (alongside VoWiFi) is becoming essential for reliable calling. Emergency calls and certain supplementary services increasingly rely on VoLTE as well.
