Wi-Fi Calling / VoWiFi: Definition & explanation
In a nutshell
Wi-Fi Calling (VoWiFi) lets you make phone calls over a Wi-Fi network instead of the cellular network. It's especially useful with weak indoor signal or abroad. Calls use your regular phone number seamlessly.
How does Wi-Fi Calling / VoWiFi work?
Wi-Fi Calling, technically known as VoWiFi (Voice over Wi-Fi), routes voice calls through an existing Wi-Fi internet connection whenever cellular signal is weak or unavailable. The smartphone encrypts the call data and sends it through a carrier's dedicated server (ePDG – Evolved Packet Data Gateway) into the core network, so the call is handled just like a regular cellular call — including caller ID showing your actual phone number.
For this to work, both the device and the mobile plan must support VoWiFi; the setting is usually found under cellular or Wi-Fi options. Unlike standard internet calling apps (VoIP), this call runs through the SIM card and uses the same voice quality and phone number as a regular call.
A practical benefit appears in buildings with thick walls, basements, or rural areas with weak coverage. Abroad, Wi-Fi Calling can help avoid expensive roaming charges, provided the carrier allows it. The technology complements VoLTE, which carries voice calls over the LTE data network, acting as a fallback when no cellular network is available.
Advantages of Wi-Fi Calling / VoWiFi
- Better call quality with weak cellular signal
- Works seamlessly with your regular phone number
- Can reduce roaming costs abroad
- No extra app required
- Automatic switching between Wi-Fi and cellular
Disadvantages of Wi-Fi Calling / VoWiFi
- Depends on a stable Wi-Fi connection
- Not supported by all carriers or devices
- Emergency calls may be limited in some countries
- Slightly increases Wi-Fi data usage
Frequently asked questions
Yes, but only slightly — a call typically uses similar data to a normal VoIP conversation, usually under 1 MB per minute. Since the data goes through Wi-Fi, it doesn't count against your cellular data plan.
