An IP address is a unique number assigned to every device on a network. It enables communication between devices over the internet or local network, similar to a postal address for data packets.

How does IP Address work?

Every device connected to the internet or a local network – smartphone, router, server – needs an IP address to send and receive data. There are two main formats: IPv4 (e.g. 192.168.1.1), consisting of four number blocks, and the newer IPv6 (e.g. 2001:0db8::1), which offers vastly more addresses and solves IPv4's limited capacity. A distinction is also made between private IP addresses (assigned within a home network, typically by the router) and public IP addresses (assigned by the internet provider, visible online). In most home networks, the router automatically assigns private IP addresses via DHCP. The public IP address can be static (fixed) or dynamic (changing with each connection). An IP address can roughly reveal a device's location, which is why services like VPNs are often used to mask the real IP and protect privacy. When roaming abroad, a smartphone typically receives a new IP address from the local network operator.
