How does Punch-Hole work?

In punch-hole design, a small hole is laser-cut or punched directly into the display panel structure (typically AMOLED) to allow the front camera to see through from beneath. Unlike a notch, which occupies a larger cutout at the top edge, punch-hole designs reserve only a minimal circular or oval area—usually in a corner or top-center. The remaining display stays fully active, enabling a nearly bezel-less look. This is technically feasible because OLED/AMOLED panels allow individual pixels to be selectively omitted without affecting backlighting, unlike LCD panels. Some manufacturers add software tricks to adapt content around the hole or visually mask it during fullscreen content. Punch-hole displays have become standard on many Android flagships since around 2018, offering a solid compromise between camera integration and maximum screen real estate—until under-display camera technology matures further.
