How does Quick Charge work?

Quick Charge (QC) is a charging protocol developed by Qualcomm, controlled via the Snapdragon chipset and a compatible charger controller. Unlike standard USB charging with a fixed voltage (usually 5V), Quick Charge negotiates voltage and current between charger and phone. Depending on the version (QC 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0), voltage ranges from 5V to 20V in fine steps (INOV in QC 3.0) to achieve optimal charging power with minimal heat generation. Newer versions like QC 4.0+ also support USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) for better compatibility with other devices and standards. For Quick Charge to work, the smartphone, charger, and USB cable must all support the protocol — if one component is missing, the device charges only at standard speed. The technology is mainly used in Android devices with Qualcomm processors, while Apple and many other manufacturers rely on USB-PD. Modern chipsets also regulate charging power based on temperature to minimize battery wear and thermal stress.
