Oppo: Turn On Screen Brightening for Face Unlock

If Face Unlock keeps failing in a dark room or at night, the front camera likely does not get enough light to map your face. Coloros has an 'Auto brighten screen for face recognition' option meant to fix exactly this, but it is easy to miss and easy to leave switched off by accident.

Auto Brighten Screen for Face Unlock auf Oppo

Face recognition depends on the front camera getting enough light to map your face accurately. In a dark room, at night, or under dim lighting, the sensor often cannot capture a clear enough image, so the unlock attempt fails.

Coloros includes a setting called Auto brighten screen for face recognition. When enabled, the display brightness increases briefly the moment you attempt to unlock the phone in low light, giving the camera the extra light it needs without you having to raise brightness manually first.

To switch this option on or off: Tap on SettingsTap on Password & biometricsTap on FaceEnable or disable Auto brighten screen for face recognition.

With the setting on, unlocking in the dark briefly lights up the screen each time, which some people find distracting at night and which can use slightly more battery over many unlocks. With it off, the screen stays at its normal brightness during a face scan, so recognition in dark environments becomes less reliable.

If Face Unlock still fails after turning this on, check that the front camera lens is clean, that nothing is blocking it, and that you are holding the phone at a normal distance from your face.

Frequently asked questions

The screen brightening only helps if the camera lens itself is clean and unobstructed. A dirty lens, a case covering part of the sensor, or holding the phone too close or too far away can still cause recognition to fail even with Auto brighten screen for face recognition enabled.
