Oppo: Turn On or Off Contact Suggestions in Messages

Typing a name into a message on an Oppo phone should pull up matching contact details automatically, but nothing shows up. This happens because the 'Suggest Contacts' feature inside the keyboard settings is switched off by default, even though the contact itself is saved correctly on the device.

Turn On/Off Contact Suggestions in Messages auf Oppo

On Oppo phones running Coloros, the keyboard and the contacts app are not linked by default. That is why typing a name in a text message or a chat app does not pull up matching contact info, even though the same contact opens fine from the Phone app.

This behavior comes from the Gboard text correction settings, not from the Messages app itself. The feature responsible is called Suggest Contacts, and it sits inside the keyboard settings rather than in Messages or Contacts.

To turn it on or off, follow this path:

Tap on SettingsTap on Additional settingsTap on Keyboard & input methodTap on GboardTap on Text correctionEnable or disable Suggest Contacts

Once enabled, the keyboard reads your saved contacts and shows a matching name and number suggestion while you type in supported apps. Disabling it again stops the keyboard from accessing contact data during typing, which is useful if you share the device or prefer the keyboard not to reference personal contact info.

If suggestions still do not appear after switching this on, check that the app you are typing in actually uses Gboard as its keyboard. A different keyboard app will not use this setting at all.

Frequently asked questions

Check whether the app you are typing in uses Gboard as the active keyboard. Suggest Contacts only works with Gboard, so switching to another keyboard app disables the feature regardless of this setting.
