A widget is a small live extension of an app that sits directly on your home screen. Unlike a regular app icon, which only opens the app, a widget shows current information at a glance: the next calendar appointment, today's weather, remaining battery, or music playback controls. On Realme UI, widgets are treated as their own layer on top of your wallpaper and app grid, and they behave differently from icons in a few important ways.
What widgets are actually for
Widgets exist to remove a step. Instead of opening the Clock app to check an alarm, or the Weather app to see if it will rain, the information is already visible. This matters most for apps you check often but rarely need to fully open: weather, notes, steps, battery, and quick media controls are typical candidates.
Some widgets are purely informational, like a clock or weather panel. Others are interactive, letting you tick off a to-do item, skip a track, or jump straight into a specific note without unlocking into the full app first.
Sizes, grids, and stacking
Widgets are not one fixed shape. Most can be resized within a grid, from a compact square to a wide rectangle that spans most of the screen width. A larger widget usually shows more detail: a weather widget might expand from just a temperature to a multi-day forecast, and a calendar widget can grow from showing one event to a full day view.
Realme UI also supports stacking, where several widgets occupy the same grid space and you swipe between them. This is useful when you want quick access to more than one widget type without giving up extra home screen space permanently.
Adding, resizing, and removing widgets
Widgets live in a dedicated widget panel, separate from your regular app list, and are added by long-pressing empty space on the home screen. Once placed, most widgets can be resized by dragging their corner handles, and repositioned like any other home screen item by dragging and dropping. Removing a widget only takes it off the home screen; it does not uninstall or affect the underlying app or its data.
Battery and performance considerations
Not every widget is equally light on resources. Widgets that refresh constantly, such as live weather or step counters, poll data more frequently than a static shortcut-style widget. If you notice unexpected battery drain, reducing the number of auto-refreshing widgets, or replacing large widgets with smaller ones, is a reasonable first step before digging into deeper battery settings.
Practical use cases
A well-organized widget layout usually mixes a handful of categories: time-sensitive information (weather, calendar), quick controls (media, flashlight, notes), and personal tracking (battery, steps, storage). Avoid filling every empty space with a widget just because you can; a cluttered home screen defeats the purpose of having glanceable information in the first place.
Widgets from third-party apps generally follow the same placement and resize rules as system widgets, though the amount of customization (colors, transparency, refresh interval) depends entirely on what the individual app offers.
