Samsung: Merge Duplicate Contacts in the Contacts App

If the same person shows up twice or three times in your contact list, an import from SIM, cloud, or a second account has likely created copies instead of updating the original entry. Calls, messages, and search results then jump between the duplicate versions, so you never know which one holds the current number. Samsung's Contacts app can combine these entries automatically once you point it at the matching fields.

Merge Duplicate Contacts auf Samsung

Duplicate contacts on Samsung phones usually come from repeated imports. Restoring a backup, syncing a Google account, and adding SIM contacts on top of each other all create separate entries for the same person instead of updating one.

One UI does not merge these automatically. The Contacts app includes a dedicated merge function that compares selected entries by number, email, or name and lets you combine them manually.

Open Tap on ContactsOpen the MenuTap on Manage contactsTap on Merge contacts. Then pick the matching criterion with Choose Number, Email or Name, review the list under Select the Duplicated contacts, and confirm with Tap on Merge.

Merging keeps every number, email, and note from the selected entries under one contact card. It does not delete any stored information; it only removes the extra listing.

If contacts are duplicated across two different accounts (for example Samsung account and Google), merging on the device can leave the copy on the second account untouched. In that case, check the sync settings for that account before merging again, otherwise the duplicate may reappear after the next sync.

Frequently asked questions

This happens when the duplicate still exists on a connected account, such as Google or Samsung Cloud. The next sync pulls the old copy back down. Check the account under SettingsAccounts and backup and remove the duplicate there as well.
