Xiaomi: Set a Notification Animation for Always On Display

When a message arrives with the screen off, some Xiaomi phones flash a full animation instead of the usual quiet Always On Display glow. If that effect feels too subtle, too flashy, or drains more battery than expected, the animation style itself is the setting to check, not the notification permissions.

Notification Animation for Always On Display auf Xiaomi

On Xiaomi phones running MIUI, the Always On Display can react to incoming notifications with a short animation instead of just showing a static clock or icon. This behavior is controlled separately from general notification settings, which is why toggling app permissions alone will not change how the screen lights up.

To adjust it, go to SettingsAlways-on display & Lock screenWhen notifications come and the screen is offChoose an animation. From there you can pick between None (Disabled), Light up screen, Rhythm, Pulse, and Starlight.

None (Disabled) keeps the display completely dark until you check it manually, which saves the most battery. Light up screen briefly wakes the full display, useful if you want to glance at content without unlocking. Rhythm, Pulse, and Starlight each show a different visual pattern around the edge or center of the screen and use less power than a full wake, though slightly more than staying dark.

If notifications still do not trigger any animation after changing this setting, check that Always On Display itself is turned on and that the app sending the notification is allowed to show alerts when the screen is locked.

Some apps are excluded from lock screen notifications entirely. Check the individual app's notification permissions alongside the setting under SettingsAlways-on display & Lock screenWhen notifications come and the screen is off.
