An Always-On Display (AOD) permanently shows time, date, and notifications even when the phone is locked. Only select pixels light up while the rest stays black, saving battery compared to fully waking the screen.

How does Always-On Display work?

Always-On Display relies on AMOLED screens' ability to switch individual pixels on or off independently. Since black pixels on AMOLED panels draw no power, time, date, battery level, or notification icons can be shown permanently without lighting the entire screen. There's no need to unlock or wake the phone fully to see key information at a glance.

Modern systems refresh the display only a few times per minute rather than continuously, saving additional energy. Many manufacturers offer customizable clock styles, widgets, or even animated AOD elements. Some devices use a dedicated low-power display controller that operates independently of the main processor.

On LCD screens, a true Always-On Display isn't practically feasible, since the backlight would need to stay on for the whole panel. That's why this feature is found almost exclusively on AMOLED or OLED smartphones. Combined with adaptive brightness, the display also adjusts automatically to ambient light conditions.
