Dark Mode is a display setting that shows apps and the operating system with predominantly dark backgrounds and light text. It reduces screen brightness in low-light settings and can save battery on OLED displays.

How does Dark Mode work?

Dark Mode reverses the classic color scheme: instead of light interfaces with dark text, the system uses dark backgrounds (usually black or gray tones) with light text and icons. Modern operating systems like Android and iOS offer Dark Mode system-wide, so apps, menus, and notifications switch consistently. Users can enable it manually, schedule it automatically, or tie it to ambient brightness, similar to adaptive brightness features.

Technically, AMOLED and OLED displays benefit the most: since individual pixels are fully turned off for black, power consumption drops measurably. LCD displays with backlighting don't see this effect, as the backlight stays constant regardless of screen content. Dark Mode is also often combined with Always-on Display to save energy in standby while still showing information.

Beyond energy savings, visual comfort matters too: in dark environments, a bright screen can feel glaring, while Dark Mode lowers the contrast ratio and eases eye strain. Most current apps support the mode natively, though design and contrast quality can vary between apps.
