Android: Allow or Block Calls in Do Not Disturb Mode

When Do Not Disturb is active on an Android phone, incoming calls get silenced by default, even from people you actually want to hear from. That happens because the People filter under Calls is set too strictly and blocks everyone except explicit exceptions. Adjusting that filter lets specific contacts or every caller through without switching Do Not Disturb off entirely.

Allow or Block Calls in Do Not Disturb auf Android

Do Not Disturb silences every notification by default, and that includes phone calls. Android decides who can still reach you through a separate filter inside the People category, which is easy to overlook if you only toggle Do Not Disturb on or off.

That filter has four states: Starred contacts, all saved Contacts, Anyone, or None. If it is set to None, every call gets blocked no matter who is calling, which is the most common reason for missed calls during Do Not Disturb.

Where to change the call filter

Open SettingsSound & vibrationDo Not DisturbPeopleCalls and select one of the four options: Starred contacts, Contacts, Anyone or None.

Starred contacts only lets through people you marked as favorites, which works well for family or close colleagues. Contacts allows anyone saved in your address book, useful if you want to screen out unknown numbers but still catch clients or coworkers.

Anyone disables the call filter completely while other Do Not Disturb restrictions, like notification banners, stay active. None keeps calls silent no matter who is calling, which fits well during sleep hours or focused work blocks.

If you only need an exception for one urgent situation, temporarily turning Do Not Disturb off is often faster than changing this filter.

Frequently asked questions

The Calls filter under People is likely set to Anyone or Contacts, so calls from matching numbers still come through by design.
