Android: Turn Keyboard Sounds On or Off

If typing on your Android keyboard feels silent, keypress sound feedback is likely turned off. Gboard controls this sound separately from your system volume, and the setting also comes with its own volume slider once enabled. Finding and adjusting it means going through the on-screen keyboard preferences rather than the general sound settings.

Turn Keyboard Sounds On or Off auf Android

Keypress sound feedback comes from the on-screen keyboard app, not from the general system sound settings. On Android, Gboard manages this feedback on its own, which is why changing media volume or notification sound has no effect on it.

To change this setting, open SettingsSystemKeyboardOn-screen keyboardGboardPreferences. Inside this menu, find Sound on keypress and switch it on or off.

Once enabled, a volume slider appears next to the toggle. Use it to set the keypress sound to a comfortable level instead of leaving it at whatever volume it defaults to.

If you use a third-party keyboard app instead of Gboard, this toggle does not apply. Each keyboard app manages its own sound feedback, usually in a similar Preferences or Sound section inside that app.

Keypress sounds can still stay silent even with the toggle on if your phone is in silent mode or if a Focus or Do Not Disturb profile mutes system sounds. Check those settings first if enabling the option produces no audible feedback.

Frequently asked questions

Check whether silent mode or a Focus profile is muting system sounds, since these can override the Sound on keypress toggle even when it is switched on.
