Android: Turn On or Off Auto-space After Punctuation

If your keyboard keeps inserting an extra space right after a period or comma, a specific Gboard correction feature is running in the background. This beta option only works for US English and can throw off your typing rhythm if you did not enable it on purpose.

Turn On/Off Auto-space After Punctuation auf Android

Auto-space after punctuation is a Gboard text-correction feature. It automatically inserts a space once you type a period, comma, or other punctuation mark, saving you a manual tap on the space bar.

The option is still labeled as beta and currently only works when your keyboard language is set to US English. If your input language differs, the toggle may be visible but will have no visible effect on your typing.

To change the setting, open Tap on SettingsTap on SystemTap on KeyboardTap on On-screen keyboardTap on GboardTap on Text correctionEnable or disable Autospace after punctuation.

Turn the toggle on if you want Gboard to add the space for you automatically. Turn it off if you type fast and often add your own space right after punctuation, since the automatic insert can then create a double space or interfere with autocorrect timing.

If your language is not US English, look for a language-specific text-correction setting instead, since the global toggle will not apply.

Frequently asked questions

This is a beta feature limited to US English. If your Gboard input language is set to anything else, the toggle stays visible but has no effect on your typing.
