Android: Turn Bedtime Mode On or Off

If your phone keeps lighting up and buzzing right when you are trying to fall asleep, Bedtime mode is either switched off or scheduled for the wrong hours. This Digital Wellbeing feature mutes notifications and switches the screen to grayscale, but only inside the window you set. Mixing it up with Do Not Disturb often leaves calls, alarms or the schedule itself behaving in ways you did not expect.

Turn On/Off Bedtime Mode auf Android

Bedtime mode sits inside Digital Wellbeing and does two things at once: it mutes sound and vibration like Do Not Disturb, and it turns the screen grayscale to reduce how alert your brain stays. If notifications still buzz through at night, either the mode is switched off completely or the schedule does not cover the hours you actually sleep.

Android offers two ways to trigger it. You can turn it on manually for one night, or let it follow a recurring schedule tied to a set bedtime, to your charger being connected overnight, or both. A schedule based only on charging can misfire if you charge during the day, which is why checking which trigger is active matters before assuming the feature is broken.

Where to find the toggle

Open SettingsDigital Wellbeing & parental controlsBedtime mode. From here you can either tap Turn on/off now for an immediate one-time switch, or open Bedtime routine to work with a recurring schedule.

Inside the routine, select Use a schedule and then Set a Schedule to define start and end times, or link the mode to charging instead of a fixed clock. Grayscale and muting both end automatically once the scheduled window closes.

If you only want to block sound but keep full color, Do Not Disturb is the better fit, since it skips the grayscale change entirely.

Frequently asked questions

No. Alarms are designed to bypass both Bedtime mode and Do Not Disturb, so your set alarm will still sound and the screen will show colors normally when it goes off.
