Android: Adjust the Call Volume

Android splits audio into separate channels: ringtone, media, alarm and call volume each have their own level. This is why raising the ringer before a call has no effect once the line connects. The call channel only becomes active during an active phone call.

To set it permanently, go to Tap on Settings ➔ Tap on Sound & vibration ➔ Adjust the Call volume. This slider controls the earpiece or speaker level for every incoming and outgoing call, regardless of what the media volume is set to.

During an actual call, you can skip the menu entirely and press the physical volume keys on the side of the phone. Android automatically detects that a call is active and adjusts the call channel instead of media or ringtone volume.

Side effect to know: this setting does not carry over to Bluetooth headsets or car kits, which often manage their own volume level independently. If calls stay quiet only over Bluetooth, check the volume on that device or app instead of the phone settings.

If volume keys do nothing at all during a call, the issue is usually unrelated to the call volume setting itself and points to a hardware or accessibility conflict instead.
