Android: Turn Off Your Phone via the Power Menu

If your phone keeps buzzing with calls and notifications even after switching on Do Not Disturb, a full power-off is sometimes the only way to get real silence. It also gives the battery a short rest without draining it further. Many people only know the long-press power button trick and get stuck when that shortcut is disabled or remapped.

Power Off the Smartphone auf Android

On most Android phones, holding the power button no longer switches the device off directly. Manufacturers often remap that button to launch a voice assistant or open quick settings instead, which is why the classic long-press stops working after a system update.

The reliable way to power off is through the status bar shortcut. Swipe down with two fingers from the top edge, then tap on the Power menu icon, and finally tap on Power off.

This menu also gives you access to Restart and, on some devices, Emergency mode. Powering off fully closes every running app and background process, which is different from just locking the screen or enabling Do Not Disturb, both of which keep the system active.

When to use this instead of Airplane mode

Airplane mode only cuts wireless connections but keeps the phone running, so notifications from local apps and alarms still fire. A full power-off stops everything except the scheduled alarm clock on most Android versions, making it the better choice when you want the device completely inactive, for example overnight or while traveling.

If the phone freezes and the power menu does not open at all, a forced restart by holding the power and volume-down buttons together is the fallback option.

Frequently asked questions

On most Android phones, alarms set in the default Clock app still trigger even when the device is fully powered off, briefly starting the system to play the sound. Third-party alarm apps usually do not have this ability, so check your alarm app if this matters.
