Android: Set a Custom Notification Sound

Android does not scan the whole storage for audio files. The notification sound picker only checks the Ringtones and Music folders. A file sitting in Downloads or any other custom folder simply will not be listed, even though it plays fine in a file manager.

To register a custom file properly, open the sound picker through the correct path: Tap on Settings ➔ Tap on Sound & vibration ➔ Tap on Default notification sound ➔ Tap on My Sounds ➔ Tap on Add ➔ Open the Menu ➔ Select a Directory ➔ Select an Audio file ➔ Select the Added audio file and tap on Save.

This process copies a reference to the file into the system sound list instead of moving the original. The file itself can stay wherever it was, as long as it is added once through this menu.

If the sound still does not play after saving, check whether the file format is supported. Short clips in common formats such as MP3, OGG, or WAV work reliably. Very large files or unusual codecs can silently fail to register, even after being added correctly.

Setting a sound this way changes the default notification tone for all apps that use the system default. Apps with their own notification channel settings may need the same sound assigned separately inside their app-specific sound menu.
