Location settings on a Realme phone decide how accurately the device can determine where you are, and which apps are allowed to use that information. Android does not rely on GPS alone. It combines several signal sources to work out your position, and understanding these sources helps you fix accuracy problems or reduce battery drain caused by constant location checks.
How Android determines your location
GPS satellites give the most precise fix, but they need a clear view of the sky and can take longer to lock on indoors or in dense cities. To speed things up and cover gaps, Android also uses network-based positioning: nearby Wi-Fi access points and mobile towers help estimate your position even when GPS signal is weak.
This is why your phone can sometimes ask to keep Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning active even while both are switched off. Scanning nearby networks without connecting to them improves location accuracy significantly, especially indoors, but it does use a small amount of extra power.
Precise vs approximate location
When an app requests your location, Android lets you choose between precise location, accurate to a few meters, and approximate location, accurate to a wider area of roughly one to several kilometers. Weather apps or regional content usually work fine with approximate access, while navigation and delivery-tracking apps need precise data.
Choosing approximate location where possible is a simple way to limit how much detail apps collect about you without breaking their core function.
App-level permission control
Every app that asks for your location can be set to one of three access levels: only while the app is actively in use, only once per session, or never. Some apps also request background location, meaning they can check your position even when closed. This level of access should be reserved for apps that genuinely need it, such as navigation or fitness tracking, since background checks are the biggest drain on battery from location services.
Battery impact and accuracy trade-offs
Continuous GPS tracking consumes noticeably more power than occasional network-based checks. If your phone feels like it drains faster during navigation or outdoor activity tracking, that is expected behavior from active satellite positioning rather than a fault.
Turning off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning support can save a small amount of battery, but it will reduce indoor accuracy and slow down the initial GPS lock, sometimes called a cold start.
Common accuracy issues
Indoor environments, tall buildings, and covered parking structures block or reflect GPS signals, leading to a wandering blue dot or a location that is off by a street or two. Restarting location services, stepping closer to a window, or briefly enabling Wi-Fi scanning usually resolves this faster than waiting for a satellite lock indoors.
