Android: Change Ring and Notification Volume Separately

If lowering your ringtone also mutes incoming notification sounds, that is not a bug. Stock Android ties both volumes to a single slider, so you cannot set a loud ringtone with quiet notification pings using the built-in controls alone.

Change Ring and Notification Volume Separately auf Android

On most Android phones, the ringtone and the notification tone share one physical volume control. Raising or lowering it in the quick settings panel or with the hardware buttons changes both sounds at once.

This behavior comes from the system audio stream design. Android groups the ring stream and the notification stream together by default, unlike media or alarm volume, which stay independent.

You can still check and adjust the combined level manually:

Tap on SettingsTap on Sound & vibrationAdjust the Ring/Notification volume

This slider only lets you push both sounds up or down together. It does not offer a way to set the ringtone louder than notifications or the other way around.

To get real separation, you need a third-party volume manager app that creates its own notification channel behavior or overrides the shared stream. Some manufacturer skins add a split slider in their sound settings, but this is not guaranteed on every device or software version.

If your goal is just silence during certain hours rather than different volume levels, a Focus mode or Do Not Disturb schedule solves that without extra apps.

Frequently asked questions

Android bundles the ring stream and notification stream into one audio channel by default. Moving the slider under SettingsSound & vibrationRing/Notification volume changes both sounds together, since the system does not expose two separate controls there.
