Android: Enable Phone Calls & SMS for a Secondary User

A newly added user profile on Android often cannot make calls or send text messages, even though the phone itself works fine. This is because calls and SMS are blocked by default for every new user account and for the guest profile. The setting has to be switched on individually per profile before that user shows up in the call log or message history.

Turn On/Off Calls & SMS for a User auf Android

Android keeps phone calls and SMS switched off for every new user profile by default. This applies to secondary accounts you create yourself and to the built-in guest profile.

The reasoning is privacy: a guest or a second person using the device should not automatically appear in the owner's call log or message history. Once the permission is granted for a profile, that user's calls and texts start showing up in the shared call list and SMS history on the device.

Where to change it

Open Tap on SettingsTap on SystemTap on Multiple users. Select the profile you want to adjust with Select an User, then use Enable or disable Turn on phone calls & SMS to switch the permission on or off. Confirm with Tap on OK to apply it.

You can repeat this for each user profile on the device, including the guest account. Turning the setting off again removes that profile's ability to call or text, but does not delete calls or messages already logged while it was enabled.

If a profile still cannot call or text after enabling this, check that the profile has an active SIM or mobile plan assigned, since the permission only controls access, not connectivity.

Frequently asked questions

Android disables Turn on phone calls & SMS by default for every freshly created profile, including the guest account. You have to enable it manually through SettingsSystemMultiple users.
