An APN is a configuration setting that gives a smartphone access to a carrier's mobile data network. Without the correct APN, mobile internet and MMS won't work properly.

How does APN (Access Point Name) work?

The Access Point Name (APN) acts as the gateway between a carrier's mobile network and external networks like the internet. It determines how a smartphone establishes a data connection, which IP address is assigned, and whether authentication mechanisms are used. Each carrier maintains its own APN settings, typically including a name, gateway server, username, password, and authentication type.

On modern smartphones, the APN is usually configured automatically via the SIM or eSIM once you register with a carrier. However, when switching SIM cards, changing providers, or using a SIM from abroad, manual APN setup may be required — typically found in the network settings on Android or iOS.

Incorrect or missing APN settings cause problems like no mobile data connection, failed tethering, or MMS messages that won't send, even though calls and SMS still work. The APN is technically separate from Wi-Fi settings, as it exclusively controls the cellular data connection.
