Set Snooze Time and Repetition
If your Xiaomi alarm keeps snoozing for too long or not often enough, the default snooze interval and repeat count are likely not adjusted to your needs. MIUI lets you fine-tune both values, but the option sits several menus deep in the alarm settings.
Pin a Conversation
If an important chat keeps sliding down your conversation list on a Xiaomi phone, new messages from other contacts push it out of view. The Messaging app sorts threads by recent activity, so a conversation without fresh replies eventually disappears from the top. Pinning keeps that specific chat visible regardless of how much new activity happens elsewhere.
Set Always-on Display Duration
If your Always-on display only flashes for a few seconds after you tap the screen, it is set to the short timer instead of staying on permanently. On MIUI you can choose between a brief 10-second preview and a version that stays active the whole time your phone is locked or in standby.
Disable Wi-Fi Direct
On many Xiaomi phones the Wi-Fi Direct toggle looks greyed out or simply refuses to switch off. That happens because the feature stays active as long as at least one device remains paired to it. Disconnecting every paired device is the only way to actually shut Wi-Fi Direct down.
One-Handed Keyboard Mode
Typing with one thumb on a large Xiaomi screen often means missing keys on the far side of the keyboard. The stock layout stretches across the full display width, so you end up stretching your thumb or shifting your grip with every message. Xiaomi's keyboard settings can shrink and pin the whole layout to the left or right edge instead.
Limit Connected Hotspot Devices
By default, your Xiaomi phone lets an unlimited number of devices join your mobile hotspot at once. That can slow down your connection and makes it hard to track who is actually using your data. Setting a maximum device count gives you back control over who connects.
Connect to Wi-Fi Using a QR Code
Typing out a long Wi-Fi password on a Xiaomi phone gets tedious, especially with mixed case letters and symbols. If the network owner has a QR code ready, you can skip the password field entirely by scanning it with the built-in Wi-Fi scanner.
Notification Animation for Always On Display
When a message arrives with the screen off, some Xiaomi phones flash a full animation instead of the usual quiet Always On Display glow. If that effect feels too subtle, too flashy, or drains more battery than expected, the animation style itself is the setting to check, not the notification permissions.
Show Memory Status in Recent Apps
When you swipe up to check recent apps on a Xiaomi phone, the memory bar at the top sometimes just isn't there, leaving you without a quick read on free RAM. This indicator only reports live usage and does not close or manage background apps on its own. Without it turned on, you lose a fast way to judge whether your phone is actually running low on memory.
Delete an Event in the Calendar App
If your calendar is cluttered with old appointments you no longer need, deleting individual events keeps things readable. Once removed, an event is gone for good and cannot be restored. On some Xiaomi phones the built-in Calendar app is replaced by Google Calendar, which uses a slightly different menu.
Show Only Local Albums in Gallery
If your MIUI Cloud stores thousands of photos, the Gallery app can end up cluttered with albums that only exist online and were never saved to your phone. Turning on Only show local albums hides those cloud-only entries so you see just what is actually stored on the device. This helps when storage is tight or the Gallery feels slow to load.
Check for System Updates
If you swiped away the update notification on your Xiaomi phone or never saw it pop up, the update itself is not lost. MIUI still tracks it in the background, you just need to trigger the check yourself. This matters when a security patch or bugfix has been sitting unnoticed for weeks.
Manage App Permissions with the Permission Manager
If you're unsure which apps can reach your camera, microphone or location on your Xiaomi phone, permissions granted at install time often go unnoticed afterwards. Over weeks several apps quietly keep background access to sensitive functions with no obvious place to check it. The permission manager under Privacy protection lists this access per function and per app, so you can spot anything that looks off.
Unpair a Bluetooth Device
If a Bluetooth device keeps reconnecting even though you stopped using it, or a headset refuses to pair again after a failed connection, the old saved link is usually the cause. Turning Bluetooth off does not remove that link, only the paired list in the Bluetooth settings does. Once removed, the device drops out of the paired list and needs a fresh pairing before it can connect to your Xiaomi phone again.
Convert HEIF Photos to JPEG Before Sending
If photos shared from your Xiaomi phone show up as broken files or will not open on someone else's device, the picture was likely saved in HEIF format. Many apps and older phones cannot read HEIF directly, so the recipient sees a blank thumbnail or an error instead of your photo. The Gallery app has a setting that handles this conversion automatically at the moment you send a file.
Turn Auto-Rotation On or Off
If your Xiaomi screen stays locked in portrait mode when you turn the phone sideways, auto-rotation is likely disabled in Display settings. Some apps also ignore rotation entirely if the quick toggle in the notification shade is set to lock orientation. Both controls work independently and can override each other depending on which one you touched last.
Clear App Data
When an app on your Xiaomi phone starts crashing, freezing, or throwing login errors, clearing the cache alone often does not fix it. Corrupted app data, broken login sessions or leftover settings can keep triggering the same error even after a cache clear. Wiping the app data resets it completely, though you will need to sign in again and reconfigure the app afterward.
Back Up Your Phone to Xiaomi Cloud
If your Xiaomi phone breaks or gets lost, photos, contacts and app data are gone unless a cloud backup exists. Many users assume MIUI backs up automatically, but Xiaomi Cloud sync stays off until you sign in with a Mi account and switch it on. Without that step, only local backups on the device itself exist, and those disappear along with the phone.
Stopwatch: Lap Times, Pause and Reset
Lap times captured in the Xiaomi Clock app sometimes vanish once you pause the stopwatch, or tapping Stop clears the whole list instead of just pausing it. This happens because Start, Lap timer, Pause and Stop / Reset are separate controls with distinct effects on the running time and the lap history. Mixing up Pause and Stop is the most common reason lap data gets lost unexpectedly.
Add a Widget to the Home Screen
Opening an app just to check a stock quote, the weather, or your next calendar entry gets tedious fast. On Xiaomi phones running MIUI, widgets show that information directly on the home screen without unlocking the app first. Many users only find wallpaper and icon-organizing options here, since the widget menu is easy to miss.
Restrict Floating Notifications in Do Not Disturb
If your Xiaomi phone keeps popping up banners while Do Not Disturb is active, incoming alerts are still showing as floating notifications instead of staying silent. The messages themselves are not lost, they simply arrive quietly in the background, but the pop-ups still interrupt whatever you are doing. This setting decides whether MIUI shows those floating banners while DND is on.
Silence Media Automatically in Silent Mode
When you switch your Xiaomi phone to Silent mode, videos, games and other media keep playing sound anyway. That happens because 'Silence media in Silent mode' is a separate toggle in the sound settings, not something Silent mode covers on its own.
Allow or Deny Picture-in-Picture Access per App
If a video keeps floating over your screen after you switch away from an app, or a floating window refuses to disappear while you're typing a message, picture-in-picture is active for that app. Some apps use this floating window aggressively even when you just want the screen back to yourself, while others lose the ability to keep playing video in the background because the permission got switched off. This setting controls exactly which apps are allowed to open that overlay window on your Xiaomi phone.
Change the Region Setting
Your Xiaomi phone picks the region automatically, usually based on your SIM card or network. If you are traveling or using a local SIM abroad, that automatic pick can be wrong for app stores, currency formats, or regional content. You can override it and set the region yourself.
