Make a Phone Call from the Dialer
If you are not sure how to start a call on your Samsung phone, the process runs through the dialer keypad, not just the contacts list. A missing or inactive SIM card is the most common reason a call will not connect, even when the number is entered correctly. Once the SIM is active, both manually typed numbers and saved contacts work the same way.
Set the First Day of the Week in Calendar
If your calendar always starts on Sunday even though you expect Monday, Samsung Calendar is following the standard location setting instead of your personal preference. This mix-up shows up right after a region change or a fresh device setup, and it throws off week numbers and planning views. Switching the start day yourself fixes the display without changing anything else in Calendar.
Change SMS Input Mode (GSM or Unicode)
If a single text turns into two or three messages the moment you add an emoji, the input mode set for text messages is the reason. GSM alphabet only covers basic Latin characters, so any emoji or special symbol forces the message to switch encoding and split. Automatic or Unicode mode prevents that, but it can affect how many messages you get billed for.
Copy a Text Message
Retyping a message just to paste an address, a code, or a link somewhere else costs time and often introduces typos. On Samsung phones the Messages app lets you grab the exact text of any message and copy it to your clipboard for reuse in another app.
Add an Alternate Calendar
If dates on your Samsung calendar don't match the Lunar, Hijri, or Shamsi calendar you expected, the alternate calendar option is probably switched off. Samsung's Calendar app can show a second calendar system in smaller text next to the standard dates, but it stays hidden until you set it manually in Settings. This affects the Korean, Chinese, and Vietnamese Lunar calendars as well as Hijri and Shamsi dates.
Add Birthday to a Contact
If a friend's contact card in Samsung Contacts has no space for a birthday, the field is not missing - it is just hidden by default. Samsung keeps birthday, anniversary and other important dates tucked away behind an extra menu step, so most people never notice it exists. Once you know where to look, adding the date takes only a few taps.
Auto-Download MMS Toggle
If picture or video messages start downloading the moment they arrive, even over mobile data you would rather save, Samsung's Auto retrieve setting for multimedia messages is doing exactly what it's built for. Turning it off means MMS content stays queued until you decide to load it yourself.
Using Speed Dial Numbers for Calls
Speed dial numbers only work if you press and hold the correct digit on the dial pad instead of tapping it briefly. For two-digit speed dial slots like 14, you type the first digit normally and only hold down the second one. On phones with two SIM cards, missing the SIM selection step can also cause the call to fail.
Share a Contact via QR Code
Sending a contact as a text message or vcf file does not always work, especially when the other phone runs a different messaging app or has no signal. Samsung phones can turn a single contact into a scannable QR code instead, so the recipient just points a camera at the screen. No Bluetooth pairing or shared network is needed for this to work.
Add a Speed Dial Number
Typing the same number every time you call a frequent contact wastes time, and many Samsung users are surprised that slot 1 is permanently blocked for voicemail. Speed dial can hold up to 999 shortcuts, using either a saved contact or a raw phone number, but the setup screen sits in a spot most people never check. Skipping this feature means dialing manually every single time.
Set Default Dialer App
If you install a third-party calling app but Samsung's own Phone app still opens for calls and messages, the default dialer assignment hasn't changed yet. This also affects which app handles your call log and dial pad, similar to how default apps work for Home, Browser or Messages. A screen lock can sometimes stop an alternative dialer from launching calls correctly.
Edit a Saved Contact's Details
A contact's phone number or email often changes, but deleting the whole entry and creating a new one throws away the call history and message threads tied to that contact. Samsung's Contacts app lets you update individual fields directly, without breaking the link to existing calls and chats. Skipping this and adding a duplicate contact instead is the most common mistake here.
Merge Duplicate Contacts
If the same person shows up twice or three times in your contact list, an import from SIM, cloud, or a second account has likely created copies instead of updating the original entry. Calls, messages, and search results then jump between the duplicate versions, so you never know which one holds the current number. Samsung's Contacts app can combine these entries automatically once you point it at the matching fields.
Rename Contact Group
If a contact group on your Samsung phone still shows the wrong name, the fix only applies to groups you created yourself. Default groups like Family, Colleagues or Friends cannot be renamed, which often confuses users trying to clean up their address book.
Delete Single or Multiple Contacts
Deleted contacts sometimes come back or disappear for good, depending on your Samsung software version. On newer Android releases with One UI, removed contacts sit in a trash bin for 30 days before they are gone permanently, while older Android 9 devices delete contacts right away, even if they were saved to your Samsung or Google account.
Customize Quick Decline Messages
When you reject a call with a swipe on your Samsung phone, a preset text like 'Please text me' or 'I will call you back' goes out automatically. If that message no longer fits the situation or you want a different wording, the default text stays unless you change it yourself. Many users only notice this after a caller mentions receiving a message they never wrote.
Mark a Contact as Favorite
If a contact you call or text often keeps sliding down your list, Favorites pins them to the top - but only once the flag is actually switched on for that person. On Samsung phones this same flag also controls the pinned row in the Phone app, so the two lists never match up on their own.
Remove a Speed Dial Number
An old contact still sits on a speed dial slot even though you deleted the number ages ago, or you just want to free up a slot for someone else. Speed dial entries do not always clear themselves right away, and the list can get cluttered fast if you never open the assignment screen.
Call Forwarding Setup
If calls keep landing on voicemail instead of reaching you on a second number, call forwarding on your Samsung phone might already be active or set up wrong. Voice calls and video calls each have their own forwarding rule, and the network often forwards calls automatically when you are busy, unavailable or do not answer. Leaving the wrong option enabled means callers never reach the number you actually want.
Reject an Incoming Call
When a call comes in on a Samsung phone, dragging the icon the wrong way answers it instead of declining it. The red handset works the same way as the green one, just pulled in the opposite direction, and calls that pop up as a small banner while you are using another app need a separate tap instead of a swipe.
Delete a Single Message from a Conversation
Sometimes only one message in a thread needs to go, not the whole conversation. Deleting the entire chat on a Samsung phone removes messages you might still need, and long-pressing the wrong bubble can select more than intended. It also helps to know that removing a message only clears it from your own device, not from the other person's phone.
Show or Hide Web Previews in Messages
When someone texts you a link, Samsung Messages can automatically pull in a preview showing the page title, a small screenshot and the URL. That preview loads over mobile data every time a link arrives, even if you never tap on it, which can add up on a limited plan. Whether that convenience is worth the data use depends on how often you get linked messages.
Edit a Contact Group
A contact group on your Samsung phone rarely stays useful forever. Team members change, a birthday club grows, and the group ringtone you picked months ago no longer matches the rest of your alerts. Renaming the group, swapping members, or changing its sound is not obvious if you have never opened the group settings before.
Forward a Message
Copying and pasting the text of an SMS only grabs the words, not the attachments, photos, or links that came with it. If you want to send the whole message along with everything it contains, Samsung's Messages app has a dedicated forward option built into every conversation.
